Serbs are noble, patriotic, and friendly people, who, like Mexico, have fought to preserve their territorial integrity and national identity. Serbia has a diverse, beautiful, and spacious territory, with significant agricultural activity and mineral deposits, such as lithium, as well as unique natural landscapes. Serbian cuisine is excellent, and wines are of a high standard, as is the rakija. I am convinced that Serbia should be promoted much more as a center of high tourist interest, considering all the attributes that I have mentioned.
In which areas do you see the greatest potential for enhancing cooperation?
– We have great potential in terms of the economy. Mexico is the 12th largest economy in the world and part of the most important trade and investment agreement on the planet, known as NAFTA. The economies of Mexico, the United States, and Canada have consolidated North America as the largest market in the world. Mexico has become the main trading partner and exporter to the U.S., more than China and the EU. Serbian companies have the opportunity to enter a market of almost 450 million consumers through Mexico and become part of production chains in North America. In the field of science and technology, both countries can share progress in biotechnology, medicine, and lithium extraction, given the recent discoveries in Serbia and those that exist in Mexico.
Despite the challenges, does Mexico remain committed to the principled stance of not recognizing the unilateral independence of Kosovo and Metohija?
– Mexico has always expressed support for Serbia’s territorial integrity over the province of Kosovo and Metohija based on its foreign policy principles, respect for international law, and strong friendship with Serbia. This policy, based on principles and the validity of international law, cannot be changed. We closely monitor the negotiations between both sides and hope that tensions in the region will decrease through peaceful agreements for the benefit of the inhabitants of that province.
City twinning between the two countries
What are the next priorities in your work here?
– Since my arrival, we have actively promoted the establishment of relationships between geographical areas and cities of both countries that share similarities, challenges, and opportunities, thereby accelerating cultural and commercial exchanges more directly between our communities. Today, the cities of Novi Sad and Toluca, Leskovac and Oaxaca de Juárez, have formalized their twinning relationship. Soon, we hope that the cities of Kragujevac and Guanajuato will also formalize their relationship. In this way, we bring our peoples closer together.
Although at the UN General Assembly meeting at the end of May, a resolution on Srebrenica, changing the rules, was adopted, 109 countries did not effectively support the resolution. Among them, in a group of 68 abstaining countries, was Mexico.
– As I mentioned earlier, Mexico’s foreign policy is based on its principles and full respect for international law. Mexico believes that resolutions adopted by the UN General Assembly should contribute to prevailing conflicts or problems and should not promote divisions or higher tensions. Mexico advocates for a genuine reconciliation process between all parties involved in the violent processes of the disintegration of Yugoslavia, in accordance with international law and paying homage to all victims without exception. Mexico abstained from voting at the UN General Assembly on Srebrenica based on these elements and considering that there was no consensus between the parties for the presentation of this resolution.
Claudia Sheinbaum became the first female president of Mexico about two months ago. Can we expect her visit to Belgrade in the future?
– We Mexicans are very excited about the election of Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum as the first female president of Mexico. The high level of political dialogue between Mexico and Serbia creates conditions for the potential visit of President Sheinbaum to Belgrade during her six-year term. Both governments are holding consultations to achieve this goal.
