Influenceer Edison Ray certainly knows how to attract attention, and her choice for the MTV VMA 2024 red carpet was no exception. This TikTok star, who rose to fame through short dance and lip-sync videos on TikTok, where she gained a million-strong audience and then began a music career, decided to wear a white lingerie-inspired set.
However, her choice did bring the desired publicity, but also a flood of negative comments, we would say – quite justifiably.
Inconsistency between inspiration and realization
Edison wore a sculptural white feathered bra, complemented with matching satin panties and a tulle addition, a custom-made piece designed by Claire Sullivan, known for dramatic creations fit for fashion editorials.
The combination that seemed like an homage to Madonna and her iconic 1984 combination and Britney Spears failed to impress all critics.
While some praised her boldness, many wondered if she had gone too far. Comments comparing her style to less flattering fashion misses appeared on social media, with some describing her look as a „combination of lingerie and diapers.“
Esthetics or too much provocation?
Edison herself stated that she wanted to pay homage to Madonna’s look from the first VMA awards, and that she drew inspiration from her music video for the song „Diet Pepsi.“ However, many felt that the combination was too inspired by Victoria’s Secret angel lingerie and not glamorous enough for such a big event. Even the proportions of the bra sparked numerous criticisms on social media, with comments that they „looked as if they were shaped in a sandwich toaster.“
Criticism with style
Fashion experts were not lenient towards her look. Her combination was often among the worst-dressed stars that evening, and many felt that Edison should opt for a more elegant, sophisticated style that would highlight her beautiful face and figure in the right way. Although boldness is always welcome at the MTV awards, sometimes experimenting can have a counter effect, which was the case here.
Although Edison Ray certainly provoked reactions – which is often the goal in show business – her fashion combination left the audience divided. While her fans enjoyed her bold look, fashion critics were much harsher, criticizing her choices and proportions. Perhaps next time Edison could find a balance between boldness and sophistication to avoid similar negative reactions.
